Science to Policy Workshop

Monaco Explorations “Indian Ocean Expedition”, led in October and November 2022, endorsed by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development 2021-2030, involved more than 150 participants, from about 20 different nationalities, including scientists, young researchers and students at the onboard school, filmmakers and photographers, divers, artists, communicators, and the vessel crew (more information here).

The objectives of the Science-to-Policy Workshop was to inform stakeholders and partners about the scientific results from the Monaco Expedition; to analyse the relevance and importance of the results; to address management issues in the studied areas; to discuss identified issues; and to propose recommendations for improving governance and management.

Contributions

  • The WMU-GOI team, represented by Director Professor Ronán Long and PhD candidate Suriya Sundararajan, contributed to the three-day event with key insights from the Indian Ocean research efforts under the Ireland WMU-GOI BBNJ Clinic Programme and The Nippon Foundation WMU-GOI Future Ocean Programme.

  • On 12 November, Professor Long presented an update on the BBNJ Agreement in a session that focused on global ocean governance policy trends including the BBNJ Treaty, the Plastic Treaty, and the 2030 targets. On day two of the event, Professor Long moderated a session on recommendations for improving the governance and the management of the studied areas for the South-West Indian Ocean.

The team further engaged in bilateral meetings with partners – including the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture, and Blue Economy of the Republic of Seychelles and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) –  and participants at the event to discuss their work in the Indian Ocean region and explore areas of collaboration.
